Solar Powered Fruit Preservation Plants – Chitral, Pakistan

A sponsored organization of United states have recently provided Mastuj subdivision of Chitral with 54 solar powered dehydrating plants. The farmers will definitely get a fine price for their fresh products because these plants will help in the preservation of fruit products like apples, apricots, mulberries and wild cherries. Non-governmental organisation the Qambar and Shandur Area Development (Qasad), with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), provided the dehydration plants to the farmers.
The training for the preservation with the help of these provided plants which includes dehydration, harvesting etc was also a part of this project. The organization has provided training to more than 150 women who can dry up the fruit with the help of these plants. According to the chairman of Qasad Syed Saadat Jan said that a single plant can dry up to 3,240kg fruit at a time.

Nusrat Jabeen, who got training under the project, said that she used to feed a large amount of apricots, apples and other fruit grown in her orchards to her cows. On the other hand this year, she preserved 100 per cent of the produce with the help of the dehydration plant.

The project is of immense important because before these dehydrating plants, fresh fruits from this area were having a bad time in the market. The fruits were dried by the customary way which was direct exposure to sunlight. These Solar Powered fruit preservation plants will help the farmers in the increment of their income.
